It's obvious how Carrot Top got his name with his big heap of bright red hair, and freckled red skin tone. He also said, "I used the name Carrot Top because it was the only thing people used to call me that you can say on TV."

Carrot Top (real name: Scott Thompson) has always stood out because of his hair, and his own unique brand of comedy, which like many who grew up to become funny people, he started developing in junior high school.

As Carrot Top indeed discovered in junior high and onward, comedy was a good way to fit in and be cool. "Younger in life I was always kind of quiet and shy," Carrot Top said. "I think I kind of grew into myself as I got older, I became more of a class clown as I got to junor high. My way of fitting in was through jokes and making people laugh. My way of making people like me was to make 'em laugh."

Carrot Top also found funniness in the family. His father was a rocket scientist who worked on the Apollo and the Gemini space programs, but he also had a terrific sense of humor, which Carrot Top learned a lot from. Carrot Top started performing in public in his freshman year in college in Boca Raton, and he became a hit on the college comedy circuit beginning in the '90's.

Carrot Top felt his first big break though was performing on Comic Strip Live, then in 1992 he made the big night ever comedian dreamed of, The Tonight Show, and he came back more than twenty times since.

Giving Props to Carrot Top

Many comedians indeed work with props like Carrot Top does, but Carrot Top also has also built his own props for his routines, proudly proclaiming, "Nobody can steal my act. I've challenged comics to write me a prop and they can't. A rubber chicken isn't enough. I have to write my own material, make my own props. These are my guitars and amps. My props are my instruments."

Carrot Top has also proven a huge hit on the road, and he went from two trunks full of props and a strobe light to 35 trunks of props he carries in an eighteen wheeler (which he'll tell you sure beats touring in a Yugo). Carrot Top performs for fifteen weeks in Vegas, and tours all over the country. He's reportedly sold out 200 concerts a year on tour.

And he's still a fan favorite live. "I was literally in tears I was laughing so hard," one fan wrote. Another wrote, "His act was a blend of self-deprecating humor, plus insightful, funny and clever observations of Vegas/current affairs/human condition plus his infamous, ridiculous props." And yet another wrote, "It's a MUST GO SHOW!" Lastly, another fan wrote, "I love this guy! He has a combination of shticks that hit my funny bone bulls-eye."
