The WGC-CA Championship is the official name of the World Golf Championship now held in March annually. (It used to be played in October.) This relatively new tourney is one of the four WGC PGA events. It is sponsored by Computer Associates, Incorporated'”not to be confused with the abbreviation for the State of California. (The company officially changed its name to CA, Inc.) The corporation is a transnational computer software business from New York'”presently posting $4 billion dollar annual revenue returns. It specializes in anti-virus and security programs.

Depending on the schedule, the tournament also invites the top three golfers from its PGA tours in Japan, Thailand (or India), Australia (or New Zealand), and South Africa. The additional tours constitute the International Federation of the PGA. Usually, somewhere in the world, there is an International PGA tournament being played every month of the year. The African Tour is called the Sunshine Tour or the FNB Tour. It has been the most controversial of the foreign tours. Until 1991, it had only been open to white players. It employs an 'order of merit' system. The winner often tends not to be the player who received the highest money amount.
The field format for this event is considered 'stroke play.' It is an exclusive championship for the top 50 ranked PGA golfers. The field is chosen from the official world golf ranking, basically the last complete money list from the prior season. Although the tournament is readying for its eleventh go 'round, only five different men have won the title here. Phil Mickelson, Geoff Ogilvy, Ernie Els, and Mike Weir have each won the tournament once. The rest of the six victories here belong to one golfer: Tiger Woods. (It was cancelled after the 2001 loss of New York's Twin Towers.)
