Brian Regan’s comedy has been called off-center, but it’s not off-color. In fact, fellow funnyman Patton Oswalt has called Brian Regan “the best stand-up comedian working today,” and he does hilarious observational comedy without bad language. A recent article on Brian Regan stated, “It’s not easy being clean,” but Regan sure is funny without resorting to four (or twelve or more) letter words.
As one journalist recently put it, “It’s easier to explain what Brian Regan’s comedy isn’t than what it is. It isn’t self-consciously bizarre; it isn’t angry; it isn’t raving; it’s just plain funny in the old-school, post-vaudeville fashion.”
Regan unconsciously started moving in this direction when he started making jokes about growing up. “Little League baseball, feeling dumb in school, that sort of thing,” he recalled. “And kids became fans of it.”
Yes, indeed he thinks dark thoughts from time to time, and thinks twisted jokes, “But I really like what I’m doing, and to me it’s a small price to pay to not do certain crazy thoughts and ideas.”
On Regan’s rise to glory he won Best Club Comedian in 1996’s American Comedy Awards, and appeared on many comedy shows including Comic Strip Live, Showtime Comedy Club Network, VH1’s Stand-Up Spotlight, MTV’s Half Hour Comedy Hour, A&E’s An Evening at the Improv, Caroline’s Comedy Hour, The Jon Stewart Show, The Tonight Show, and many more.
Then Regan’s 1997 self-financed album, “Brian Regan Live,” sold 150,000 copies, and is often ranked on iTunes Top Ten Comedy Albums. Regan has starred in two Comedy Central specials, and has three DVDs, “Brian Regan Standing Up,” “The Epitome of Hyperbole,” and “I Walked On the Moon.”
Regan also went through an important rite of passage for many comedians, performing for Johnny Carson, and winning the classic Tonight Show host’s approval. “It’s so bizarre to stand behind that curtain and hear his voice start to introduce you,” Regan said. “This icon you’ve been watching since you were a child. It was a lot of fun.”
Regan’s onstage persona is a regular guy comedian, and he’s a hard-working comedian who keeps a very busy touring schedule, playing 80 cities a year. Searching the net, Regan’s live comedy is very well reviewed by professionals and fans alike.
“I took my wife to see Brian Regan,” one fan wrote, “I had seen him perform on Comedy Central in the past and really enjoyed his observational comedic style. But neither of us could have imagined how much more enjoyable it was to see him perform live. I don’t think either of us stopped laughing for his entire performance.”
Another fan wrote, “My cheekbones have been aching all day. It’s been a small price to pay to be completely and utterly cracked up for more than 90 minutes. My sister bought tickets for me, our husbands also went along for the show, which attracted children, teenagers, and adults of a wide age range.” Many attractions claim they’re fun for the entire family, but Brian Regan is indeed very funny for people of all ages.
