When you think of Swedish art house films, you don’t think of fun, light-hearted romps, but that’s exactly what famed Swedish art-house director Ingmar Bergman directed with his classic film, Smiles on a Summer Night, which was then adapted for the stage as A Little Night Music by Stephen Sondheim.

The Magic of Stephen Sondheim and Harold Price

Stephen Sondheim is of course one of the stage’s greatest composers and lyricists, writing lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy, and writing the musicand lyrics for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and of course, A Little Night Music. Sondheim has won many Tonys throughout his career, more than any other stage composer in fact, including a special Lifetime Achievement in the Theater Tony. He has also won a number of Grammys, a Pulitzer Prize, and an Academy Award.

The title A Little Night Music is taken from a Mozart piece, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, and the best known song from A Little Night Music is “Send In The Clowns.”

A Little Night Music debuted in 1973, and was directed for the stage and adapted for the big screen in a movie version by Harold Prince, another legend of the stage who has won 21 Tonys for directing Cabaret, The Phantom of the Opera, Evita , and many more stage classics. Prince and Sondheim first worked together on West Side Story, and collaborated with each other for many years.

A Little Night Music has been performed all over the world including London, Austria, Paris, Australia, and more. A Little Night Music has also been performed at several opera companies, including several acclaimed performances at the New York State Theater in Lincoln Center.

The music for A Little Night Music is very complex to perform, and is often tough to pull off, but Sondheim and company have executed it beautifully, hence the play coming to several Opera companies. It is also a testament to Sondheim’s composer abilities to make some complex music work so beautifully.
